SWIMMING.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS. ] The weather yesterday was far from being good for swimming races, but at the Century Baths the Timaru High School Boys splashed about with commendable light-heartedness, and the j cold ram did not prevent them from making a success of their annual carnival. All evinced a keen interest and hearty enthusiasm. The number of spectators was smaller than in previous years. As judges Messrs Simmers, Mackenzie, Roekel, and Malthus j gave entire satisfaction, and Mr i'. J- ! Dunn was an excellent starter and timekeeper. The boys were in fine form and every event was well eon- ; tested and the times registered were < in some cases over the standard. M. Donoghue, who has been school chanipion for the last three years, did not enter, the reason being so his fellowscholars said "that he was giving the rest a chance." This sportsmanlike | behaviour was much appreciated and when later he successfully- attacked the school's 60 yards' record, doing the distance in 33 3-6 seconds (previous best 37 sec) he received quite an ovation.
