Per Press Association. A BISHOP'S WELCOME. GISBORNE, March 10. The Bishop of Waiapu is paying his first official visit to the Poverty Bay portion of his diocese and to-night he was tendered a civic reception in the J l *? 11 HaU - Abou t 1000 persons attended and speeches of welcome were delivered by Mr W. D. Lysnar, (the Mayor), Mr J. Townley and representatives of the local Anglican clergy, Father Lane (representing the Roman Catholics), and Rev. Bishop Averill, in reply, expressed his keen appreciation of the great kindness he was receiving in the new district, which helped to compensate him for the regret he felt in leaving his old parish in Canterbury. He touched upon the necessity for great-souled men to fill public positions, supported the military defence system, and strongly inveighed against the betting evil. BAND CONTEST. WANGANTJI, March 10. YVanganm is beginning to wear a I band contest apnearance. The first visitirg band from Gisborne arrived tins afternoon. Providing good weather is experienced the contest promises to be very successful. DAIRY SHOW. PALMERSTON N., March 10. For the dairy factory division of the National Dairy Show in June next close on 300 entries have been received, as against 201 last year. The entries cover every province of the dominion. The largest entrv is 48 for a box of export butter for" the Weddell Challenge Cup. Another large entry is 33 for the Shaw Savill Challenge Cup for the best box of butter from cold storage bulk. The New Zealand shipping Company's Challenge Cup for best three cases of full cream cheese (coloured) brought 21 entries and the best white 22 entries. LICENSING MATTERS. WOODVILLE, March 10. At the quarterly meeting of the Pahiatua Licensing Committee to-dav an application from M. O'Dowd for a transfer of the Kumeroa Hotel license to him was withdrawn. CHURCH ROBBERS. CHRISTCHTRCH. March 10. Two church robberies en similar lines to those reported some time ago have occurred in the city within the past fortnight. The collection boxes in St. Michael's Church have again suffered, and the Church of Christ was also entered and the collection boxes prised open. In neither esse did the thief secure anv substantial sum. SURGICAL WARD. The foundation stone of the children's and women's surgical ward at the Christ<-hurch Hospital was laid today by Mr R, Beaton Rhodes, M.P., in the absence of Mrs Rhodes through, indisposition.
