OUR MAIL SERVICES.
To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald." Sir, —Permit me to draw attention to <lll anomaly in the mail arrangements. Our Government are spending considerable sums of monoy in facilitating the carriage of English mails by various routes, some of them occupying under and none over five weeks, except the direct steamers. So far good, considering the number of ports of call by the 'steamers engaged. This morning's "Herald" publishes an interview with the Postmaster-General in which ho "foreshadows several increased facilities. But I sea no improvement in our delivery, so far as
Timaru is concerned, with it-s large export trade. Just note this. The Suez mail is usually landed at the Bluif on Monday morning. Yet when does delivery take place in Timaru? Just any time between Tuesday afternoon and Saturday. I have had papers delivered on Saturday. Take this week as a sample. The mail arrived at the Bluff on Monday morning, and this is Wednesday afternoon. Suppose the same speed was maintained from London, how long do you think it would occupy in transit. Just about fcur months. Yet New Zealand (yide the interview) is leading the worll in postal matters.—l am, etc., s. Timaxu, March 9th.
