jMr P. R. Gilliugham, of Fairlie, was re-elected to the Board as repreBentativo of the ratepayers of the Mackenzie County. For Levels County Mr C. N. Orbell and Mr G. Butler iiave been returned unopposed. Mr Butler was nominated by Messrs J. Crawford and J. Glidden; and Mr Of bell, by Messrs W. MeKibbin and J. Stewart. ' Mr John Holwell being the only person nominated for the vacant seat on the South Canterbury Hospital and Cliaritablo Aid Board to represent the Temuka and Gcraldine boroughs, was declared elected yesterday at noon. A LADY ELECTED. Very little interest was taken locally in the Hospital Board elections—so little that a great many people had forgotten that nominations were to close at noon yesterday. Neither of the two Bitting members for Timaru—Messrs Craigio and Hawkey—offered themselves for re-election. There were only two nominations—3.lrs C. L. Newnliam, and Dr. Gabites—and consequently these two have been elected unopposed for the Borough of Timaru. Mr 3 Newnliam was nominated by Mrs Rule and Mr Frank Smith, while Dr. Gabites was nominated by Drs. Dryden end Burns. MEDICAL REPRESENTATION. To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald." Sir, —A few words in explanation of the nomination of Dr Gabites to a seat on the above- Board mny not be out of ]?l0O8. For some time there has been a feeling amongst the medical prolessiou of Timaru that tlio value if medical representation on the Hospital Board should bo pointed out. As the public knows, the Board exists for the purpose of Managing tho hospital and of administering the funds which ore devoted to charitable aid. Hithorto, there has been no medical member on the Board. The profession which has done the work has had no official voice in the management. It Would seem obvious that expert knowlodge should lie of value in the pro-' vision of medical relief, in the same wny as expert knowledge is necessary to the successful conducting of any | business. The medical profession is I the only body of men possessing th«J technical knowledge required in this case. Both the ratepayer and the sick poor should benefit by the avoidance of false economies and misapplied expenditure that are apt to result from defective knowledge of medical and surgical requirements. 'We may point out that in England the principle of medical representation on the governing bodies of the great general hospitals is recognised and act- ' ed upon, and has proved of great value. | For the above reasons it was decided at a meeting of the medical pro- I fession recently held in Timaru 'that lOr Gabites should be nominated. H. V. DREW, F.R.C.S.. Eng. Convener, h. S. TALBOT. P.R.C.S., Eng. Secretary. Per Press Association. NELSON, March 9. Among the nominations for the new Hospital Board are Mrs C. Y. Fell and Mrs Robert Watson. CHRISTCHTTRCH, March 9. For the seven sity seats on the local Hospital Board there are sixteen nominations, including three women, and the Congregationalist minister and the Jewish minister. DTTNEDIn/March 9. Considerable interest was taken in the election of the new Hospital Board. The names of Mrs Lindo . Ferguson, Mrs Blair (president of the Women's Christian Temperance TTnion) and Mrs Gibson are among the list of nominations. , ■ Mrs Ferguson's nomination had to Tie withdrawn as her name does not appear on tho electors' roll.
