PERSONAL ITEMS.
Mr Parata, M.P. for the South Island Maoris, was a passenger by the first south-going express yesterday. Mr Biss, district railway engineer, was in Timaru yesterday looking into various matters affecting the Railway Department here. i'iie Governor, with Captain Shannon. A.D.C., and H. C. Waterfield, private secretary, left Christchurch for Greymouth via Broken River and Oxira yesterday morning. After spending ten days on the coast, the party return to Christchurch en route to Wellington. Air F. W. Marchant is at present at Gisborne, under engagement to the Borough Council to report upon the state of the water-works contract. . A. conference is also to take place with the Council regarding the plans and engineering connected with the sewerage scheme. Mr W. Chynoweth, who has been foreman of one of the departments of the Pareora Freezing Works since their opening, was tendered a farewell at Pareora on Monday evening prior to leaving for the North Island, where he is going to take up farming. Mr Watkins, foreman butcher, on behalf of the heads of the departments, which lie was connected with and friends asked Mr Chynoweth to accept . a massive eight day clock as a token of the high regard they had for him, and the pleasant relations thai; had always existed between them. Mrs Chynoweth was also presented with a silver-plated sugar bowl. A number of speeches were made expressive of the loss felt at the departure of a good friend, and a cheerful fellow worker; and the health of Mr Chynoweth and his family was drunk with musical honours.
