THE COAL STRIKE.
NEGOTIATIONS CONTINUED. Press Association-Bv Telearaph-fopvriirli* SYDNEY, March" IT Judge Scholes, on behalf of the Newcastle miners, is continuing negotiations to try and reach a settlement. ABRUPT ENDING. STRIKE PROLONGED. Received 12.20 a.m., March-2nd. NEWCASTLE, March 1. The proceedings of the Wages Board came to an abrupt termination. A telegram received from Melbourne stated that application was being made to the Commonwealth Arbitration Court with regard to the claims of the Engine-drivers' Association. As a matter of fact the engineers' cases are now being dealt with by the State Wages Board and its award should shortly be made.. The proprietors now have to show t< the Federal Court why thev should no. be obliged to have their case heard all over again. As the proprietors' representative and counsel have to go to Melbourne tue Board adjourned till next Tuesday. Mr Charlton made it clear to the Court that the colliery employees' federation was no party to this ~new development; on the contrary they view it with apprehension. It is now generally regarded as improbable that a settlement of the strike will be effected before Easter.
