Mr Justice Darling, in passing sentence, said that the evidence showed that Mrs Charlesworth had invented the story of Violet Charlesworth's fortune and inoculated Violet with the idea as a young girl. This idea Violet ingeniously developed by fraud upon fraud. The mother's defence Was that she always believed the daughter's story.

SEVERE CENSURE. The Master of the Rolls in dismissing the appeal of Dr Bodie, the "bloodless surgeon," against a claim of £IOOO damages, described him as a swindler, and an ignorant and unscrupulous quack. ANGLO-GERMAN FRIENDSHIP. Prince Henry of Prussia received a deputation from the Anglo-German Friendship Committee, including the Duke of Argyll, Lords Avebury, Lonsdale and Courtney. In replying, Prince Henry said he reciprocated the sentiments of friendship, and expressed the Kaiser's gratification at the committee's aims. IN SEARCH OF OIL.
