They were sitting on the beach — four of them. Bronson had just come from the city. The others had been there for a couple of weeks. The girl in question was sitting some distance away, under an umbrella, quietly and demurely reading. Tl'ie other fellow looked at Bronson, each with an incredulous smile. "That's all right," said Tilter. "So I thoucht: hut it isn't so easy. Wo have all tried it on." ho said, "and up to the present moment wc have failed. For myself, T cannot make out whether she really objects or not." Bi.onso'n gave another look in the direction of tho young woman in question. "Perhaps you were in too much ot a Imrrv," lie said, reflectively. "IF von think," said Quibb, with a satirical grin, "that you can give- us auv points on that proposition, you are labouring under a totally unjustifiable delusjon. I haven't been snending my summers at seaside resorts for the past eight vears for nothing." "Nevertheless," replied Bronson, "1 bet T can kiss that girl within twentyfour hours. There's a spot on the back pizza," he. continued, "and you can see it from one of the top windows of that bathhouse yonder. Now, you boys can sec me do tho trick. How would half-nast five this afternoon do," "T'll bet von a hundred you can't do it." brok'o in Hubton. "Will you fellows take a third each?" he asked, turning to his companions. "Sure!" replied Quibb. "I'm in!" replied Tilter. "It's a go!" said Bronson.
Thev all Tiicfc a sain at six. behind a friondlv rode. The trio that had hot with Bronson wore all pretty well crestfallen. "You did it." said Tilter, disconsolately. "You're a wizard, all right. Boys, pony up." . "That s easy money, said (juibli, as he counted out his share. "T don't know of any hotter way of makiiifr a hundred," said Hubton, as he handed it over. Bronson. smiled. "You mean fifty." he replied. "Fiftv!" exclaimed the three of them in chorus. "You made n hundred didn't you?" Bronson smiled again. "Fiftv of it." he exnlained, "goes to the fiirl."—Life (N.Y.)
