TIMARU CHRISTCHURCH. ROAD RACE Tlic most meritorious performance in the road race was certainly that of A. Birch, who rode the world's best bicvcle—the Superb Swift. A Birch started from Tim'aru three minutes before J. Arnst, and arrived at Plumpton Park close behind Arnst, covering the distance, 112 miles, in 6 hours 37 minutes 25 2-5 seconds, equalling nearly 17 miles per hour. The public know that some irregularities occurred in connection with the pacing of J. Arnst, who was awarded tho fastest-time prize. Rule 6 of the road reads:—"Any competitor accepting pace from any person other than contestants will bo disqualified. The Leagno awarded A. Birch tho second fastest-time prize, and wo now leave it to the pnWic to say whether ho was not entitle:! to tho fastesttimo prize and the Blue Ribbon, considrrinz that" J. Arnst was paced by his brother after the latter had retired from the race and was no longer a contestant, having been carried somo distance in a motor-car. The League of -New Zealand "Wheelmen, by their decision and entirely ignoring their rules, have now approved of motorcare being used in the Timaru-Christ-church race to pick up tired contestants with their bicycles, who could bo dropped when refreshed to continuetor ~ The rank and file, numbering i.c'rlr one hundred and fifty, of conrse had no motor-cars specially employed t„ ,-nrrv pacers, and had, therefore, t.. !>lug" against the strong easterly wind, making the best of the pace provided bv their fast-tiring comrades, ca cu ami all bravely struggling without out-ide aid to win one of tho cevetcd priz.-.. a»J especially that for tto fetest t:..«-.
