THE GRAIN MARKET. Owing to the i-ciiiivs there has been little doing in the gram market «hb week. As the end of the cereal Tear is approaching the question ot sufficiency of supply or of surplus to carry over is being keenly discussed, and those who are in the way of obtaining information admit that estimates must he largely based on guesses. The balance of opinion seems to be that there is enough wheat and oats to see New Zealand through till the next crop is ready for t«, tart with not ranch to spare. The North Island and West Coast are, of course, constant customers; hut of late enquiries about wheat have been made from the South. This cannot, however, be safely taken as an indication of immediate shortage in that quarter; but it has a meaning in the fact that the southern harvest is later than in Canterbury. . . There is not much actually doing in wheat, but the prices keep firm, from 4s Id to 4s 4d for choicest lines of velvet. Whole fowl wheat is worth 3s lid f.0.b., s.i. -.seconds, anything from 2s 6d up, according to quality. There are outside inquiries for oats, though very little business has yet followed. Duns may be quoted at Is 5d to Is 6d, Gartons Is 6d to Is 7d on trucks at country stations, s.i. Potatoes were a big crop last year, but there were big losses from progressive disease before and after lifting, and at one time they could scarcely be given away. Sound potatoes now have a value, and there is a pretty good demand, for them. Sizeable lots are worth 55s to 60s in trucks at- country stations, s.i., for . North Island and West Coast, markets.
