Athletic & Cycling Notes.

(By Official.) Dates of South Canterbury- Meetings. November Uth. —Glenavv fepoits . November Oth. Mackenzie v>a c donian Society at Fairlie. . December lGth. —Pleasant 1 oin Caledonian Society. . December lGth.- —Morven District Sports. , ~ . , December 2Gth. —Teniuka Calcdonian Society. December 2Gth. — Waimate -Caledoii ian Society. " . December 28th. —Albury Athletic Club. . January Ist- and 3rd. —South Canterbury Caledonian Society.

The Mackenzie Caledonian Societv s ! programme for their sports at tairlie, j on the Oth November shows that the principal running events arc 130 yds. handicap, (£9); -140 yds., (£2 1 os); SSOyds., (£3); one mile. (£3 10s); 130 yds. hurdles, (£3). There arc hammer, stone, and caber events, and high jump, ho[)-stcp-and-junip, and vaulting. There arc nine events in music and dancing. The total prize money for the sports is £5-3 and nine special prizes. Entries close on Ist November and pipers and dancers will note that- their entries must be in by that date. The AVoodbury Athletic Club will make a good profit on their Labour Day sports and will, counting last year's credit balance, be about £3O to the good. Competition in most of the events was keen. The 220 yds. hurdles was the best contest, the limit man, J. Allen just getting home, with a big field close on liiin. AA r . C. AYoodger, late of AA r ellingtbn, but now of TimaYu, won - the 440 yds easily from 2yds with A. Gimson second. AVoodger, it will be remembered, ran second in the £SO Sheffield at sports held by the South Canterbury Professional Athletic Club, last 9th November. He is a smart sprinter and I have heard it said that he is quite a match for his brother, the Australasian amateur champion for the hundred and 220 yds. TVoodger, and the local crack, Leu TVood, were both on scratch in the 100 yds. handicap, but owing to their having competed in other events just -previously neither started. It will be an interesting race when they meet. .TV. Tavener, of Belfield, had easy wins in the 880 yds. and one mile handicaj>s. George Campbell from scratch won the high jump with oft sin. Miles Metcalf also cleared that height after the contest was over. Metcalf is improving and is becoming quite a good all-round man, taking part successfully in various jumps, in shot-putting, hurdle races, . and throwing the cricket ball. Some years ago he won the Dunlop lload Race, Timaru to Christchiirch. Glenavv sports on November oth., should attract- good entries. These close on 2nd November for the three distance (100 yds., 220 yds., 440 yds.) Shefield. and the 880 yds. There are two cycling events the first cycle racing of the season in South Canterbury. The South Canterbury Caledonian Society are on the lookout for noveltics for their New Year sports. An exhibition of boxing, or a match between two clever boxers would'' undoubtedly lie very interesting. I understand that the. necessary permit could be got from the local Boxing Association and the members of that body would doubtless help the Caledonian Society in the matter.

> St Andrews Sports Club having failed to get a permit for Anniversary Day will probably decide t-o hold their sports on 30th St. Andrews Dav, a very appropriate time. The Timaru to Christcliureh Road Race is now becoming much talked ef and the prospects of the various riders form a subject of keen interest to all lovers of cycling. A general opinion seems to be that the starts arc too large and that among the men from the 30 minute mark onward there are many riders with fine chances. A\ . Walsh, (Papanui), 3omin. is a rider who, in the last Dun lop Race, would surely have had a place but for bad hick.* He put up a very fast time to Winchester gaining 2 minutes on Ralph Rodgers in that distance, but lie punctured between Winchester and Geraldine and had to retire. P. Campbell, Temuka. 39min. is a rider whose chances are highly spoken .of. Dick Arnst,- the sculling champion, is said to be a certain starter but some say he will be out to help ".Tack." If so, it is a, bad job for the Timaru crack, Ralph Rodgers, also on 7min. J. Coulter, 3"min., from Palmcrston North, is a rider who has lately beaten the North Island crack, Henderson, so lie ought to go near the fastest time nrizc. W. Broad, Invcrcaririll. with 22min. is a likclv winner. It is considered that with the roads in their present condition that the fastest time should be not more than 5J hours for the 103 ,miles. Possibly it will lie done in 5- hours. The race is to start from the il.vville Hill and the first men leave at 8.44 a.m. It is exneeted that the number of starters will be a record. E. Slow, the Fairlie rider on 3lmin. is lvekoned, by those that know his abilities, as possessing a chance second to none. F. Pepper, Hawarden. one of the limit- men is reported as having ridden the distance from Geraldine to Temuka. paced by a motor car in twentv-three minutes. T.'Shannon was let in rather lightly at the Chertsey sports on October 13th. He" won the lOOvds. from 2yds. in Usee., and the 440vds. from F'j-aMt in 53 l-osec. F. J. Alexander, loyds ) won the 880 yds. in 9 min 11 sec. p**d (I. T. Smart (scr) the milc< in smin.
