At the Magistrate's Court to-day Charles Jloggard for exposing liquor for salo at Gold Creek on the GisborncMotu railway route, was fined £3O and costs £7 9s 3d. The charge against the samo accused for selling to tho cooperative labourers was dismissed, proof of salo being insufficient. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. At the Polico Court .Nathaniel Burgess wa scommitted for trial for alleged failing to keep proper books. EVADING CUSTOMS DUTY. WELLINTON, Oct. 22. John "Winchester, a, passenger by tho Rimutaka was lined £lO to-day for endeavouring to evade tho payment of Customs duty on various articles of jewellery of the value of £lO. Tho goods were ordered to ho forfeited. HARD ON THE PIANO. WESTPORT, Oct. 22. .Tames Stirlon succeeded in passing tho world's record for endurance in piano playing last night. He played continuously for GO hours 17 minutes, breaking the former record of 00 hours 3 minutes hold by Travis. A reliable committee watched the proceedings in relays. CAPTAIN PAVITT'S DEATH. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 22. With reference to the Military Court of Enquiry regarding the death of Captain Pavitt; the chief of general staff (Colonel A. AV. Robin, C.8.) states that in any case the Court of Enquiry must be held. Tho point to bo settled is whether the deceased officer was on dutv or not at the time of the. accident. The Defence Department's liability for compensation rests upon that issue.
