HARBOUR BOARDS.
THE WELLINGTON CONTEKENCK
Mr J. Criagie who returned from Wellington yesterday, wiiere Jig lias been attending the Harbours Conference tuis ivtxi, is of opinion that tho deliberations of the conference will prove oi some value when the Harbours Bill comes before the House iu the approaching session of Parliament. He could not say much about tho conference as the Harbours Hull which was under discussion has to be treated as confidential until it is iu circulation. There were between 40 and 50 delegates present aud Mr Wilford, chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, presided. Mr \Vilford is a lawyer and his legal knowledge, as well as his acquaintance with liarbour matters, made him an excellent chairman. The conference lasted two long days and in this tune st lot of important points were discussed. There was a good deal of discussion on the proposal sent forward by tho Timaru Board, that where parts oi" a county are sandwiched in with boroughs, the country residents should bo placed on the same basis for voting as that enjoyed by residents of boroughs. After he had explained the unfairness of tho existing slate of afairs the. remit was carried by u. big majority. The whole o tho Harbours Bill was gone through and certain amendments w«n> made. These lie would mako known to the Harbour Board at its meeting on Friday next. He took it as an honour that he had been elected a member of the 'Executive of the Harhonrs Conference.
The weather, while he was in Wellington, was atrocious. There was rain and wind on Sunday. Monday. Tuesdav and Wednesday and on gettinc back home yesterday, ho appreciated the sunshine and the green fields. While in Wellington ho nitended to several
matters affecting Timaru. Very keen interest was taken in Wellington in tlio result of tlic Ranjiitikei election, and like other politicians on the Government side of tlio House, ho was pleased with tlio result of it.
