CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

DIRECTORS" MEETING.

A meeting of the directors of tho South Canterbury Caledonian Society was held last evening in the Alliance Chambers. Present —Messrs R. H. Ferguson, President (in P. Foster, G. P. Gerrie, F. Palliser, W. Mcßride, J. O'Leary, C. Hall, W. Burmester, W. A. Courtis, D. G. Watson, R. Priest, J. Hole, W. Hall, G. Triggs, and the secretary, Mr C. S. Fraser.

The first business dealt with was in connection with tbe Pipe Band, and an old debt of £lO alleged by the Band to be due to them from tho society. The president detailed the result of a conference between three of the directors and three members of the Band. The net result was that the Band said they were in poor financial circumstances and considered the amount should be paid to them in full.—lt was pointed out that some mistake had been made, but that- rather than debate the matter further, the £lO should be paid. The president said that next new year would fall on a Saturday and the directors should decide whether they should hold a two days'"sports meeting in January next. For himself, be thought they should continue as in the past, to hold a two days meting. They should hold the first day on the Saturday and the second on..Monday.—It was decided that this suggestion should be adopted. The Fairlio Caledonian Society (through Mr J. P. Ralaugher, secretary to the Casli Athletic Union) applied for leave to hold their sports meeting on December 31st. —The president said he thought it would bo better if the Fairlie Society held their sports on a date a little more remote from t-I>e Timaru snorts. He did not think that the Fairlie Society would object to altering tbeir proposed date if it were put to them in a proper way. —Messrs Hall and Watson did not think that sports at Fairlio would affect the Timaru sports in any way. — Mr Foster pointed out that the Timaru Society could not assist the Fairlio Society in any way if the latter held their snorts so close to tbe Timaru sports.—The matter was fully discussed and eventually it was decided to write to tho Fairlie" Society asking them to endeavour to fix a date which would not clash with the Timaru sports. Suggestions were invited for novelties to insert in the next new year gathering at Timaru.—Mr Triggs suggested a bicycle competition and this was passed on to the programme committed for consideration.—The secretary suggested that an effort should be made to get Tommy Burns to give an exbibtion ot sparring on the second day, and this was considered a. good proposal—it feasible. . It was decided to give the same amount of prize money as last year, namely, £325. Mr Triggs suggested that the timaru Caledonian Society should challenge tbe Oamaru Society to an annual Marathon race to be run between Oamurii and Timaru. finishing in the Jimani Caledonian Society's grounds one •vear and in the Oamaru Society s grounds the following year. The race could lie run in 10-mile relays. Tin's was not viewed favourably as it was considered that it would take away the runners from the sports meetings. Mr Triggs then suggested some amateur boxing contests.—Some of the directors looked favourably noon this while others thought it might not find favour in the eyes of ladv patrons of tbe snorts.—lt was decided to refer the suggestion to the programme tonmntU *AWrs G. On: ■.. J. H. Rndgers. and J. Marks were elected members ..i the SOC'etV. . . „ ... The" Mißarv Carnival Committee applied for the loan of tbe staging owned bv the soeietv.— Application declined, as the experience of tbe society in lendine it Previously was not or a satisfactory character.

Mr J. Hole offered £1 Is to the prize fund.—Accepted with thanks. The secretary mentioned that tho society now has an overdraft and tliab ho would therefore he pleased to receive members' subscriptions at as early a date as convenient. A vole of thanks to the chairman closed Hie mooting.
