Meat Works Products.

The manufacture of bye-products is being rapidly developed in .Nw Zealand. Parts of the animals formerly discarded are now turned into medicines, oils, soaps, brushes and combs, handles for household cutlery and tools, leather for harness, boots and travelling bags, studs and buttons from the bones and teeth. A list of the slaughterhouse products that ate' now utilised for commercial purposes'includes hair, bristles, bones, horns, hoofs, glands and membranes, from which latter are obtained ' pepsin, thymus, thyroids, pancreation, glue, fertilisers, hides, skins, wool, sausage casings neatsfool oil, soap stock, glycerine from tallow, brewers' isinglass, and albumen. Albumen obtained from the blood of slaughtered animals' is used by calico printers, sugar refiners and others. The bones coming from cooked meat aro boiled and the fat and gelatine which result are used, the former to make soap and the latter for transparent- coverings for chemical preparations and for other purposes. The uncooked bones are used in a variety of ways. From the Iwncs of the legs of cattle are made the handles of tooth brushes and knives, chessmen, and nearly every article for which ivory is usable; combs, the backs of brushes, and large buttons are made from horns, which are split and rolled flat by heat and pressure. Hoofs are utilised according to their colour. White hoofs are imported largely into Japan .to lie made into various ornaments. From striped hoofs buttons and Lorn ornaments are made, and black hoofs are used in the manufacture.of cyanide of potassium, for the extraction of gold, and are also ground up as fertilisers. Jfeatsfoot and other oils are extracted from the feet and other parts of the body. Butterine and margarine aro also largely composed of the fat of animals. Of course all these bye-products aro'not- obtained in New Zealand, but developments are going oil •which will eventually result i n a complete "extraction of all the bye-pro-ducts. —(Dalgety's Review. )
