JERUSALEM.
| , INTERESTING LECTURE. The AYesleyan Hall was comfortably filled last evening with. an audience who had assembled to listen to the addres.V given -by the Rev. C. H. Laws, <>l Chnstchurch, who took as his subject an account of a trip to Jerusalem. The ltev. W. liaumber presided and introduced tJio speaker, ' who vcrv quickly placed himself in sympathy xvitli his audience and commanded, their keen attention by Lis very inforesting remarks. After giving a lucid account of the best manner to yet to the Holy Land and the trials and tribulations, of the new-clium when in contact' with the officious" Turkish customs-house officers, Mr Laws took his hearers in spirit for the ride in ,tho light railway from Jaffa to Jerusalem, lie. remarked that a good many people had a wrong conception of the sizeof the. Holy Land, as' a matter of fact from Dan to Beerslieba was not so far as from Timaru to • Cliristchurcli and the tract of country ruled over by Solomon was not as big as Canterbury. The country wsis shut in and isolated bv the sex on the west and the deserts inland and no bis trade routes passed through it. 'Perhaps to a man who did not love his Bible, : said Mr Laws, the trip to Jerusalem would not; be - of much interest, aWtliere were plenty of places wherei finer scenery could be seen, but to a. religious man, the whole jriirrney was of absorbing and enthralling interest. An hour was pleasantly passed in listening to a very vivid and graphic description of the Holy- City and its environs, and a large number of very' fine lantern slides, most of them the work of Mr Laws were shown, Mr Hardy manipulating the lantern. A very, hearty vote of thanks was enthusiastically passed to Mr Laws at the close of the- lecture.,
