HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.
YESTERDAY'S MEETING. The bi-monthly meeting of the Timaru High School Hoard was held in the Education Office yesterday.. Present: Messrs \V. J3. Howell (chairman), J. Bitcheucr, J. MeCahon, B. It. Maedonald, G.. W. ..Armitagc, J'", Raymond, Rev. 'J'. Stinson and J. K. Moore. The chairman reported that the new janitor had taken 'up his duties ,and he (the speaker) had authorised the various small renovations to the lodge that were necessary. Mr It. H. ]3owie had been appointed a life member of the Board in place of the late Mr J. Jackson. The chairman's action in authorising the rcnovationo of the caretaker's house was approved. Jn response to a .request by (he headmaster and lady principal, it Was decided to grant the usual £5 towards the "games fund of the boys-«nul girls high school." No formal report- was received from the headmaster. The lady' principal. Miss Watts, reported that the number of girls on the roll had continued tlio ■ auie throughout the term. One of the pupils whose free place had expired was appointed a probationer at- mm of the public schools, but she still continues on' the roll and is taking a course in one subject for matriculation. The free place of another pupil had also expired so she would probably not return next term. On the ipth inst. the girls had held a successful sale of work and entertainment to provide money for an honours board and the surplus was to go towards the games fund and library. The entertainment had been very successful and there, 'would be enough. money for the honours board, a few pounds for the Tennis Club, and still be able to spend £2 or £'3 on standard books for the library. The matriculation examination in English requires some knowledge, of ill'- works. . The report of Mr Rol lesion appointed to inspect and value the Board's reserves was read and discussed and" itwas decided to accept the values and notify the. tenants of tho revised valuations. The Education Department wrote notifving the Board of the appointment of Mr R. H. Bowie as a member of "the Hoard in nbicc of Mr J. Jackso", df-eased. -Kncen-ed. The Department also forwarded, Mr Isaac's report on the technical classes at the High School, which was Eatisfactorv. Mrs M. llanlon, through her agent Mr Nolan, applied for a reduction of her rent of a reserve at Orari, which at i>re<=ont was let to her at 28s iier nr . ro .—it was decided that no reduction of the rent could be made. Mr V. H. Rockel asked that sundry tree-planting and improvements be done at the rectory.—Matter left to the chairman to arrange. It wn« decided to al.ow a refund ot £2 of. the school fees-paid for It. Fitaamounting to £4B 9s M were passed for payment and U>e Board rose.
