REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. SOUTH CANTERBURY BEATEN. Special—By Telegraph. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 28. The Canterbury and South Canterbury ladies' teams whose match was played -in Sydenham Park to-day experienced one of the inexorable rules of representative matches when they had to line out on a soaking field in the rain. It is an unwritten law that such fixtures must be played no matter what the weather, because they can seldom be postponed like an ordinary match. The players, however, undertook the experience in good spirits as they slipped rather than walked to their positions for the initial bully. Canterbury won by two goals, both scored in the first spell to nil.

The game was fast, and although it was played under rather adverse circumstances the passing and hitting were good. Canterbury were hotter in attack but in forward passing movements South Canterbury were much superior and they would have scored several times but for the splendid defence of Miss'es Thornton and Robinson. The S.C. full backs were also very clever Miss Green being a splendid driver, while Miss Hodges in slick play was about the cleverest player on the ground. Canterbury had a little the better of the game all through Deiiig. strong in individual good players, and for fifteen minutes in the second spell they were continuously attacking. The teams were as follows: —Canterbury: Goalkeeper, 1). Pearce; fullbacks, K. Thornton, M. Robinson; halfbacks, W. Whitcombe, M. Campbell, L. Rule; forwards. M. McMillan, A. Rennie, R. Rhodes, A. Pearce, A. Manson. South Canterbury: Goalkeeper, N. Gunn; fullbacks, I. Green, M. Hodges; halfbacks, M. Murphy, M. Hunt, P. Hurdley; forwards, i"'. Pringle, A. Howens, N. Quick, N. Sullivan, G. McWhirter. From the bully South Canterbury were pressed hard, "but good hitting relieved. Miss Whitcombe then sent the ball down the line to Miss McMillan who centred nicely to Miss Pearce and that player hit an easy goal, when the game had been in progress only a few minutes. Canterbury again invaded but another shot by Miss Pearce' went wide. ■ Still another hot Canterbury attack found Misses Green, Hurdley and Hunt defending cleverly, being • very sure in hitting the ball. After even play South Canterbury rallied aiid from a fine passing rush Miss Howeris shot in the circle, but missed the net by about a yard. Miss Pringle centred well in a further attack, but Miss Campbell cleared, and initiated a counter attack, a shot by Miss Manson being kicked out by Miss Gunn. A couple of corners to Canterbury produced* nothing. Misses Rule and Pearce led the next attack, and Miss Whitcombe had a fine shot whicli was stopped by Miss Murphy shoulder high with her hand right in front of thecnt. In a further scramble Miss Rennie had a shot through a maze of feet and registered the second goal. Kver>. ■ play followed to the end of tho spell, Miss Rule putting iii good work at left half in stopping attacking movements-

11l the second spell South Canterbury immediately set, up a determined attack l>y ;i sweeping forward movement. Miss I). J'earce .stooped :i couple of dangerous shots and the hacks then cleared. Miss Rhodes made ;i good run to the visitors' eirele where Miss Quick cleared nicely. Here a long siege was made by Canterbury the most creditable part />f the play lying with Misses Green and Hodge, in defence, the last-named being very collected and useful in getting in her bit. Misses McMillan, Manson, R"iiuie. and Rhodes attacked repeatedly, from the right wing, and shots were frequent but Miss Giinn was playing a fine game in goal and stooped repeatedly, on one occasion kicking the ball out from what appeared a certain shot by Miss Rennie. Misse.s Pearce and McMillan made strenuous efforts to score, but the circle was a. ouagmide. and no goal resulted. .lust on the -all of time Miss McWhirter made a fine run mi the line, but was unsupported, and Miss Thornton cleared.
