JUBILEE BIRTHDAY.
CHAMBER, OF COMMERCE. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, August 27. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce celebrated its jubilee birthday to-day when it held its fiftieth annual meeting. The occasion was made specially interesting and many references w r ere made to the chamber's small beginning fifty years ago and to the progress it has made. Mr A. J. Marrinor presided and there was a large attendance of members. The annual report and balance-sheet dealt with the causes of the recent depression in the money market, with the drop in the price of frozen mutton and the condition of the wool market. The chairman also reviewed the working of the Conciliation Act and the effect of cheaper cable rates; and touched upon the canal project and the rate of exports from Lyttelton. He also spoke of the history of the chamber during the past fifty years.
