The engineer had just reported lavourably to the Department that the employment of the men working there was showing satisfactory results. l'air average wages would be earned, while some camps would do well. It was intended to employ 50 per cent, of the men on clearing and opening road lines after September Ist with a view to having the block ready for settlement. There had been no complaints about the sixteen men who had left the works since the commencement; and they had not left for reasons in connection with the work. The Cabinet had not yet decided whether to open the block to settlers in December next-, or to leave it till February, when, after the annual burns it would be sown with grass by the Government.
