AT AUCKLAND. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, August 13. At the Police Court tliis morning, Thomas Dowd, master of tho scow Flora was ehargod with manslaughter in connection with tlu- drowning of Frederick Clark by thi' sinking of tho scow in Auckland harbour. Accused was remanded for a week, hail in one. surety of £HH> being allowed. Mr Kettle, S.M., Rave judgment this morning in a case in which Mr Ford, of the Shipping Line, sued the Superintendent or Mercantile Marino fnr C!>' -Is lOd. A sailor injured oil plaintiff's vessel was sent ashore for treatment. Tho Department required plaintiff's company to deposit a sum. Id cover the sailor's maintenance while i n<*apaoi ta ted. 'lho sailor was attended bv a private doctor and lived at a hoarding-house. .The plaintiff contended that they were not liable for the man's maintenance unless he went into a public, hospital, and tho tiuui \v:is not entitled to bocause he had signed off and received |,IS discharge. The. .Magistrate held that the sailor was entitled to medical expanses, provided that these did not exceed tho amount which lie would have paid in a public hospital. Ho was of opinion that the act of a man signing off terminated his engagement, but would like an authoritative pronouncement, and gave both sides leay# lo appeal. lie gave judgment iof plaintiff for ,L's 7s ■id wages paid, and lor the defendant in the matter ot medical expenses.
