SKATING. Despite counter attractions the rink was well patronised at all sessions yesterday, a largo number of learners making their first appearance on the wheels. Beginners are requested that wherever possible they should attend at the afternoon sessions, as far more time and attention can bo paid to them by instructors. The next carnival, a 2>oster and fancy dress, will be held in about three weeks' time, and the management requests that all carnival ! coiupetitiors should hand in their ' names and the various characters they are representing, to enable a full carnival programme to be published. "URBAN PICTURE COMPANY. The above picture company open at the Theatre Royal on Tuesday next, for three nights. The famous name of Urban is well-known all over the world as film makers, and the pictures to lie shown will be of the best, well selected

programmes being shown. The company have an up-to-date plant, and all the latest improvements in moving picture machines. The programme will consist of educational, industrial, humorous and dramatic subjects also introducing some wonderful scenic and travel pictures. The pictures to be shown are said to be lifelike and naturally produced on the screen. The box plan will open at the Dresden to-mor-row morning at 10 o'clock. ARNST-PATHE PICTURES. There was si fairly good house at the Theatre last night, when Dick Arnst and his company opened their one night season return visit, with a complete change of programme. A particularly fine lot of pictures were shown in the first half of the entertainment prominent among which were splendid views of iscenes in India and Ceylon; a remarkably fine coloured picture of a Swiss pageant, introducing quaint and ancient dance ; another original subject which obtained the hearty applause it deserved was the picture of drill as carried out by the boys of the Reedham Orphanage. The evolutions performed by these lnds was a revelation of what good teaching can accomplish. The dramatic and comics were uniformly good and were watched with interest and amusement. The machine used by the company is one of Edison's latest and is by far the most silent that has so far visited Timaru. Last, hut not least, the graphic representation of the world's championship boat race was shown as before and the explanatory remarks made by Dick Arnst during the progress of the picture just gave the necessary touch of realism to the picture. Jack Arnst and Fogwell rode" an exciting 3 mile race on the homo trainer. Arnst just winning on the tape, and a few more pictures closed -the entertainment.
