TEMUKA NOTES.
(From Our ,Own Correspondent.) A decidedly wintry change in the weather occurred yesterday morning. About 8 o'clock the glass began to fall and rain soon set in, and continued throughout the day, with south-wes-terly squalls. The contractors for the Opihi bridge are now driving the piles for the tenth upan, and much better progress is being made with this difficult undertaking.
Somu excellent entries were received yesterday for the Temuka Boxing Club's tournament on Thursday, :26th August, and it promises to oe successful. The return card match between the Veterans and the Temuka Catholic Club resulted in a win for the Club by ten games. The melnbers of the Club entertained the visitors, and a pleasant evening was spent. Mr V. G. Day, S.M., presided at the Temuka Court on Tuesday. In the case, J. J. Kavanagh (Mr Joynt) v. J. O. Johns (Mr Aspinall), claim £8 for board and lodging, the plaintiff's evidence, which was taken in Christchurch, alleged that the amount due was for board, and defendant on oath stated that he did not owe the money, and was in the habit of paying fort•nightly, and had settled up to date when he left Kavanagh's. After hearing evidence, the Magistrate said the claim had 'been pressed by four different persons, and each time differed in amount. In the face of the evidence he niust nonsuit the plaintiff with costs. In the following cases judgment went for plaintiffs, with costs :—Temuka Borough Council (Mr Aspinall) v. Geo. Broderick. claim 2s lOd, and H. Lee (Mr Aspinall) v. S. Smith, claim, £lO.
