CANTERBURY t. SOUTH CANTERBURY. (Referee—Mr W. W. Smith.) The representative match between the North and South Canterbury teams "was played on the Athletic No. 2 ground yesterday, in beautiful weather, and before a large number oi spectators. The ground was in firstrate condition, and those present were treated to a very fast and skilful exposition of the game. The teams were as follows: — North Canterbury (red and black). — Luxton, goal; C Bowden and G. Ford, backs; Snell, Anderson anc Howison, halves; E. Ford, D. Smith. Featherstone, Free and Green, for wards. South Canterbury (white and black). —>V. Powell, goal; Wallach and A. J. Stephens, backs; Davis, Signal, anc Lagan, halves; Metson, Bennington, bmith,- Fleck and Chappie, forwards. As will be seen by the scores the home team were beaten by seven goaL to one, but it is a question for argument whether the score really repre sents the difference between the two teams. The visitors' combination told heavily in their favour, and they weL deserved their win, but they had to work for it, and work hard too, for it was no walk over, and half a dozei* times the Whites were in a splendic scoring position, and had hard luck in missing the net by inches only, twice hitting the post. The Red backt were very sound and sure, and cleared well, which was more than could bt said of one of the southern team't backs, Stephens, who repeated!} missed, and stopped to steady the bah when the opposing forwards were right on him. \V. Powell, in -goal, had aj. lively time, and gained well deserved applause by several really brilliant saves when hard pressed. All the home team's halves did good and consistent work, especially Signal, whilst in the forward division, Chappie, Beddington and Metson were prominent, and well backed Tip by Fleck and Smith. Of the visitors' forwards, Green and Ford on the left wing performed some fine fast work and centred well, and the back division were sound, and fed the forwards consistently. The game was two 40 minute spells. Losing the toss, the visitors were putter defend the eastern goal, and the pace was made hot from the bully off. The initial rush of the Reds ended in the ball going behind, and from the hit out the visitors soon returned again, after some very hot work ic the centre of the field of play, and the ball went out in the southern territory. From the throw in play went across the field with'' a rush, the northerners taking command and dribbling on the left wing. A neat centre by Green ended in a melee in front of the Whites' goal, and after a couple of hot shots had missed, the ball went behind. The Red forwards took charge when it was in play again, and after a fine combined rush Featherstone put the leather into the net and scored first blood for the visitors. The home team got the advantage from the bully, but their rush was stopped by a penalty against them for kicking, and the resulting shot went behind. A

free for sticks against the Whites iu front of the goal allowed the Reds to have a shot, and a bad miss by •Stephens was rectified by Powell. Chappie then got command of the ball, but was stopped and up-ended by the opposing halves, and some exciting and interesting play ended in a shot at goal which narrowly missed, hitting the post. A Red rush ended in an exciting mix-up in front of the home goal, and Powell, to save, hit the ball behind, and a corner was awarded to the-north erners. A neat pass out, and the Reds catching the ball on the return, Smith directed it between the posts, notching the second goal for the Black and Reds. A good run down by F. Smith and Metson resulted in a corner against ;he Reds, but no score eventuated, the backs relieving with a strong hit out. The next few minutes' play was very ast, xhe leather travelling lip • and down the field at speed, the attack ind defence of both sides was good to [ watch, and the Whites were once lucky in having sticks awarded to them just as the ball shot into their net. Green scored, very cleverly for the Reds, his backhanded swipe shooting the sphere past Powell, and rebounding into the net off his pads. When the half-time- whistle went South Canterbury were pressing hard and keeping the play in their opponents' territory. On resuming the Whites performed a fine combined run, the Reds retaliating in kind and gained a corner, from which Featherstone scored. Shortly after Smith again scored for the visitors, and theVi came the only southern score for the day, a grand combined run ending by Metson's shot coming oil'. Within. 80 seconds of returning the -Reds scored again, Anderson, doing the trick, Free following his example shortly after, and in spite of the southern team's desperate attempts to balance the scores, nothing further happened until the wliistle went for time. North 7; South 1.
