TRAINING SCHOOLBOYS.
A COMMONWEALTH IDEA. A few daj'S ago the Commonwealth Minister for Defence (Mr Joseph Codk.i made available the report on physical training in the schools of the Commonwealth' presented by the recent interstate conference. The conference was representative of the Commonwealth and the various States, with the exception of Tasmania. The following recommendations were j made: — (a) The appointment of a supervisor of physical training for all school children in Australia. (b) The appointment in eacli State of expert teachers to carry out the training of instructors for the cadet forces and of teachers for the schools. (c) The establishment of permanent training centres, properly equipped and staffed. (e) That facilities lie afforded to teachers to atend the training schools. (e) That a system of physical training ho included in the curriculum of schools. (f) That experts should be selected to direct the training of teachers. (g) That a manual of physical training be compiled. (h) That certificates of competency be issued to trained teachers. The conference further recommended the adoption of a co-ordinate system of medical inspection in all States, and estimated the cost of carrying out all the recommendations at £B,OOO per annum. A final suggestion was made that the members of the conference should be allowed to submit detailed proposals for carrying out any recommendations that might be adopted, and that any future conference should include representatives of other' than State schools.
