WAIMATE NOTES.

(From our own Correspondent.) The Waimate Brass Band on Thursday night inarched to the residence of their popular president, Mr John lilack, where they provided in their best form a, musical programme. They were hospitably enceruuned uy Mr aiu Mrs Black, and a presentation to the president of an enlarged photo of the oand was made by Conductor Wills, who expressed the band's gratitude to Mr Black for his ever ready help in any and every way to further the interests of the hand. Mr Black cordially responded, and said he would always be very pleased to assist the buna in which he wuk a great mceresc. The Salvation Army's annual meeting in connection with their social work was held in the Waimate Barracks on Thursday night. The Mayor (Mr N. Francis) presided, and spoke on the good work done by the Army in this connection. Speeches followed by the Revs. Harris. Morrison . and Penny. Mr It. Meredith and Adjutant Buttimore. The "Waimate orchestra and the Army's brass band played selections, and other musical items were provided. A collection was taken up in aid of the rescue work. The Waimate Technical Classes Debating Society held a mock Parliamentary election on Thursday night. Mr A. Hume presided over a fair attendance. The" candidates, of whom there were four, laid their views before the electors in the usual (and some unusual) ways. They took themselves fairly seriously, almost lost sight of the "mock" element, and some good election speeches were given. The result was a "win for the Government candidate.
