In the House of Lords ah animated debate took place on_ Lord Gorcll's motion iii favour of cheaper divorce courts in the interests of the poorer classes. Lord Gorell incidentally remarked that if the practice of drink could be abolished the divorce court might close its doors. '
The Archbishop, of Canterbury strongly opposed the motion, ' which was after the Marquis of Lansdowrie had supported Viscount Halifax's and Lord Loreburn's suggestion as to the desirability of the appointment of a Royal Commission on the wliole subject, including, as Lord Lofeburn remarked, the publication of a mass of, "dirty .stuff" iibsome papers.
