OBITUARY.

REV. R. JACKSON

All who were acquainted in Tiuiaru ■with the Rev. It. Jackson, late pastor of Chalmers Church, received a painful surprise yesterday morning when hearing that a cable message had been received stating that lie had died in Canada. A letter received by one of his friends in Timaru last week stated that lie had been greatly benefited by the change of travel, and that he was at time of writing in as good "SdPMth as ever he had been in his life. This news was received with gratification his many frends here, who were looking forward to his return to South Canterbury. The cabled information yesterday, announcing his death, came as' a greater shook by reason of the cheering information of last week. It was not thought that the rev. gentleman was seriously ill when be left here, but that he was simply run down, and that change and rest would set him up again.

The late Mr Jackson was called to the charge of Chalmers Church in March, 1902, at which time building operations on the present edifice were not started, with the consequence that for some considerable time divine services were conducted by him ii: the Theater P»oyal. He remained in the charge until March, 1908, when illhealth compelled him to relinquish the position, and acting under medical orders, lie travelled to Auckland and took passage in the s.s. r Mararaa via Vancouver.' After travelling about a little he settled down in Aberdeen until three months ago, when he left that city for Canada, where he died. He was "a man of sterling worth, one wiio did a great deal of good by stealth. Particularly good was lie to those in. need, and tJiose who knew him best say that lie was one of those of whom one' could scarcely speak too highly. As pastor of Chalmers Church, lie was mucii loved by his congregation, he was particularly well liked oy jjouna men, and! it was with deep regret that his congregation ana friends parted with him wnen he left litre. Having been brought up on a farm, Mr Jackson always had a liking for outdoor life, and shortly before he died" he purchased a property in Canada. MR J. A. AINGE. Per Press Association.
