The "Montreal Gazette" says that a State,-owned; Atlantic cable would be almost a complete'failure, as tinPacific cable has accomplished nothing to warrant the State assuming part of the financial burdens of the Press. The "Kingston Standard " says that the reduction of -the Pacific cable rates imposes another burden on the gener:.i taxpapers. MP, HENNIKER-HEATON'S VIEWS. STA,TE-OWNED CABLES. Received 10 p.m., June 29th. LONDON, June 29. The. newspapers publish Mr Josiah Thomas's letter to Mr Heivniker Hea- j ton in reference to cable matters. Mr Heaton in a letter to tho "Times" declares that even : a reduction of 50 per cent, on the existing rates to Australia: for the Press and people would he of no use. He reverts to his original proposals for the purchase of the cables for State-owned cables; Urges the Government to purchase Mr Marconi's inventions, and to secure his personal services for the remainder of his life.
