FOOTBALL.
To the Editor of the- "Timaru Herald." Sir, —Having read the reports in regard to rough play at a match in Timaru on Thursday last, I see the Rugby Union complimented the referee on his efforts- to make football a good clean sport, etc. Now in my opinion can the referee compliment the Union on the way they white-washed the offending players. Fancy a player disputing the referee in his rulings, and when lie admitted having clone so, the union severely cautioned the man. The other cases are just as glaring as the above mentioned, and I would like to see the same cases before the Canterbury or Otago Rugby Unions to deai with. I understand it, has been a difficult matter to get persons to hnve a go with the whisle, and judging by the union's "strong determination" to put down rough play, etc., it is 710 wonder that it is a hard job to get referees.—l am, etc., CLEAN SPORT.
