THE TABLE RATES.
TO BE REDUCED. Press Assodat.ion-By Telegraph-Copyright Received 12.50 a.m., June 20th. LONDON, June 28. The reduction in rates by the Pacific Cable. Company becomes', operative in about one mouth. The ••Times" says the. value of the Pacific Company's offer is enhanced by New Zealand's patriotic action. There is good reason to anticipate that the reductions will thoroughly justify themselves from a business standpoint. The. "Times" hopes that private companies will grant a similar reduction, as the transmission of news in a. nutshell is fertile of misunderstanding in fhe creation. STATEMENT BY ~MR DEAKIN. MELBOURNE, June 28. Mr Deakin, the Federal Premier, has declared that any reduction in cable rates will he welcome to Australians. He is consulting, the postal authorities on the question of reducing the land charges. Generally speaking, the FederaF Government are favourable to a reduction. The Pacific Cable Board had informed flic. Government that they had agreed to reduce their proportional charges, and asked the Commonwealth to reduce : ts proportion. The request has not yet been considered by the PostmasterGeneral. Any reduction by the Pacific Cable Board must bo notified to the Eastern Extension Company. This probably meant that the company would reduce the rates on press messages.
