FEDERAL POLITICS.
THE NEW MINISTRY. Press Association-By Telegraph-Copyright Received 7 p.m.j June 2nd. - MELBOURNE, June 2. The new Federal Ministry was sworn in as follows: —Premier, Mr Deakin; Minister of Defence, Mr Joseph Cook; Treasurer, Sir John Forrest; AttorneyGeneral, Mr P. M. Flynn; Minister of Customs, Sir Robt. Best; Minister of External Affairs, Mr L. F>. Groom; Minister of Home Affairs, Mr G. W. Fuller; Postmaster-General, Sir John Quick; Vice-President of the Executive Council, Mr E. D. Miller; Honorary Minister, Mr Foxton."
A petition containing S,OOO signatures has been presented in the House of Representatives, asking for a referendum to enable the people to express an opinion on unification. When the House met, Mr Deakin announced ' the names of the new Ministry, and moved the adjournment of the House till June 23rd, to enable the Government to formulate a policy. After a couple of hours' criticism of the coalition and the Cabinet by the Opposition, Mr Deakin's motion was carried by 28 to 22.
The Senate was counted out while discussing a motion to adjourn for three weeks.
