Mrs Joseph Ivess, who greatly assisted her husband in his various newspaper enterprises, died at Clinsteliuieii on Friday afternoon. At one time the familv resided in Timaru.
Air 11.' Nevill Smith writes from Merlin, to his sister, Miss Chrissie Smith, that some of her flower paintings have been displayed at one ol the best art galleries in that city. Mr J. H. Bavnes, late resident engineer to the Timaru Harbour Board, is now engineer to the Rockhamptou Harbour Board, Queensland, and the chairman in his annual report (a copy of which has been shown us) in his commendation of the work of the staff, makes special mention of "the energy with which the engineer-in-chief lias thrown himself into the difficult and at times disagreeable task of reorganising the system of river work."
Mr TJ. Nelson, guard the ballast train now working between "Wincliester and Orari, has been transferred to Christ-church, and prior to his leaving the members of the ballast gang at the camp made him a present of a shaving set, in token of their esteem for him. The presentation was made by Mr A. F. Andrews, one of the workers, who with Mr Hancock, the ganger. spoke in terms of highest praise of Mr Nelson's good qualities as a fellow employee and as a camp mate, nn'l assured him that be. wa.s leaving with the good-will of all. Mr Nelson made a suitable acknowledgment of the gift, find of the good feeling which had prompted it.
