HUNTING.

AROWIIENUA MEET

Yesterday the Waimate hounds hunted in the morning, and the South Canterbury pack hunted in the atteriioon. The weather was perfect, the going good, and the scent all day was good. What more could be wished as forerunners of a day's sport A big field, mostly well mounted, turned out to welcome members of the Waimate Hunt to the district. The Waimate Hunt was represented by eight very straight goers, and ten couple ol healthy well conditioned hounds, which did credit to their kennel management. C. Cornelius, who hunted them, had every reason to be very proud of the sport shown by his little puck. Ihcv hunted with dash and great accuracy, not fast but sure. Soon alter finding a hare Strathnoon blundered and 1 el J on his rider, C. Cornelius, who was "knocked out" lor a time. His whip. J. Wemy.ss, a plucky rider and the right man in the right place, stuck to the hounds and, assisted by M. Orton, kept them on the line until Cornelius I'luekilv remounted, and eventually killed nis hare after a very good run of about two miles and a halt, confined almost entirclv to Air Shaw's country. Another hare viewed away on Air T. IfroKtiahan s farm brought the pack to their noses very soon at tor slipping through a fence into an old grass paddock. After a long check the iiuis-ieal little pack owned faintly to the suspicion of a line. Following it they nere rewarded by a faint scent developing into a reliable one, which tliey stuck to for about three miles over Air I . Brosnahan s ami Air O'Driscoll s farms. 'J lie hare H as eventually lost, but it was a lir.-t rate run ov, r st-ui country, the chief leatiire being very pretty hound work throughout. Alter a sDcll for luncheon m tiie field, tlie Master of the South Canterbury Hunt took the opportunity ol expressing Jus pleasure in welcoming tne Waimate rtunt. and at tne same tunc congratulated tlieni on tlie very excellent sjort shown during tne nioiiiiug. B. liowker. -VU' BowKer, in reply, spoke in very complimentary terms ol the .'Miuth Caiiterliury Huni,, and expressed the hope that later in i the season they would visit A\ annate and on many future occasions, and that when in the Waimate district lie hoped to give them the same hospitable welcome that the. "W ainiatc Hunt had received in Timaru. 1 be Wiiimate representatives then gave heart} cheers for the South Canterbury Hunt and their Master. After a long drtn\ in the afternoon a hare was eventual}} found who gave the field a prctt} fast gallop with an occasional check ovei about four miles of country. She «as eveiituallv lost on Air Dash's farm al-i-r I.Mvimr crossed Air T. Brosiiahall s. Mr W. Fitzgerald's. Air ICelland s and Air Breen's farms.
