BEAUTIES OF NATURE.
To the Editor of the '-Timaru Herald." Sir,—l read with pleasure in to-day's "Herald" some comment on the autumn beauties about Fairlie. There is beautv everywhere. If people would, lift their eyes for a little from business or work, and look up and around at nature, they would be cheered and uplifted by God's great The mountains of Scotland and elsewhere have become familiar through the medium of nature-loving writers, but I doubt if one in ten knows the names ot lhe mountain peaks around Timaru, those of our own Southern Alps. lam one of the nine, and would fain be enlightened.—l am. etc, IS/s'o:j. COUNTRY MAID. IThere is a plentiful ignorance on tins subject, because the maps most in use are of too small a scale to allow names of peaks to be inserted. Thereare larger maps of counties to be had. but these take account chiefly of artificial features. Perhaps someone who knows will be good enough to accept vour hint. As for flic Southern Alps.' none of their peaks can be seen from this side of Burke's Pass, except from some elevation, and except the top of Mount Cook, whi-h is visible from near Timaru and the neighbourhood, from Pareora East and from near Suthcrlands Ed.
