EFFECT OF UNION

The Karl of Crowe, Secretary of State for the Colonies, in his speech at the South African banquet, declared that the driving; force of the Union was a desire to transform South Africa into a great dominion like Canada and the Commonwealth of Australia. He added that the Union would conduce besides the material to the- moral strength of South Africa. DELEGATES. TO BRITAIN. Received. 11.Ho n.ni., May 19th. CAPETOWN, May 19. Mr Botha, Mr Smuts, and Sir George Farrar (leader of the Opposition), the Transvaal's delegates from the South African Union 'Convention to the Imperial Government, sail on June 30th, and Viscount Selborno a week earlier. Mr Botha chiefly attends to union matters; Mr Smuts, besides assisting in the. discussion of the constitution, attends the Imperial defence conference.
