If to deserve success is hotter even tluin t-o achieve it. tin- South Canterluiry Coursing C'luh may ho said to have n-viui'd the bott.-r part, hut the regrettable tact has to he recorded that- with them the coursing business ha* ncViT run in a manner calculated to place the clul) on a .sound working ha>is. The promoters of the sport have (lone their level host, and no fault can be tairly charged against tiiein. but for n.t.iie leason or other they have not been supported in the way tnat it anticipated they would !).• by ti.e sporting section of the community: ci.ur.sing in an enclosure has not taken on in South Canterbury, and this being so . it would not i>e. surprising if the club decided to discontinue its efforts to provide attractive coursing meetings. A particularly hard stroke of ill luck betel the club this year in the loss about three, weeks ago, of between <>() and til) hares representing a cash value of iiliout £'-". some person or persons having let the hares out of their endosecf home at the plunipton. -Nothing daunted, more hares were obtained, but it is stated that since Sunday last about 15 of these have mysteriously disappeared, and the result was that there was an insufficiency of hares for the meeting which opened on the Washdyko Plunipton yesterday. There was enough for the opening day, but not enough left lor to-day and the result is that the events which were partly decided yesterday will have to l>e concluded at Oamani to-morrow. The weather did not promise well for the sport yesterday, but the rain held off, and the bite that was in the air was all in favour of keen going on the part of the dogs. The first round of the Maiden Stake, for which liberal prize money aggregating £52 was ottered, and for which there wore 46 entries, was got off, and the first and second rounds of the Open Stake were also got off, some very good work being put in by the dogs.
