On b.;kalf of a small remnant of workmen in tno category of postal strikers, and also to secure the reinstate ment of the dismissed men, and concession of tne original demand, the '.o-ivmittee of the general confederation of labour were goaded into voting for a general strike. The committee, have accordingly issued a manifesto urging the trade unions to immediately strike, and the carpenters' and masons' and labourers' unions in Paris are responding. The Government Bill authorises State servants to combine for professional purposes, but forbids affiliation with non-State workers' unions. DIVISION OF FEELING. BROKEN FULL DEADLOCK. Received 1 a.m., May 20th. SYDNEY, May 19. The Amalgamated Miners' Association have instructed their delegates not to endorse the action of the combined Unions at Port Piric in deciding to resume work. A referendum was taken of Broken Hill miners to-day on the question of resuming work. The Premier promised "to introduce legislation against the long hours worked in Asiatic workshops. Hestated that the existing law had proved ineffective to stop unfair competition against Europeans. SATISFACTORY AGREEMENT. SYDNEY. May 19. The conference between the Coastal Steamship Owners' Association and the Seamen's Union resulted in a satisfactory agreement in regard to working hours and rates of pay, both sides making concessions. The agreement will have a. currency of three years.
