STREET BETTING.
VIEW FROM A WINDOW
Per Press Association.
WELLINGTON, May 18. Mr Riddell, S.M., gave his reserved judgment in the case in which Richard Kagt-r was charged with street betting. The Magistrate held that as the section of the Act was highly penal, the Court must be satisfied that the evidence showed the defendant to have been cited for an exact offence created by it. In -the present instance the defendant's actions had been witnessed at a distance —from an upstairs window —by the police, and though they were such as to enable possible inferences to be drawn, they were not enough to warrant a conviction, and the case was dismissed.
