TOUR OF AUSTRALIANS. MATCH AGAINST SURREY. I'rts.s AssociaLioii-By Telegiuph-Copyrigiu LONDON, May 17. Rain delayed' the opening of the match, Surrey v. The Australians, and the weather was cold when play began, but cleared up later. Five thousand persons were present. Lavcr. Hopkins, Gregory, Carkeek, and O'Connor, were omitted from the Australian team, and Spring and Rushley replaced Leveson-Gower and Ducat in the Surrey eleven.-' Crawford won the to.ss, and as the wicket was firm Surrey went in first. Hayward played a very quiet innings, lasting an hour and 45 minutes. Hobbs' play was neat and varied ; he hit six fours. Hayes played a free and stylish innings. The first wicket fell for 101. and the third for 109. Marshall was uneven, though he made some good drives. Crawford made a wretched start, and was missed before scoring by Cotter, off Noble. The partnership with/Marshall lasted 40 minutes. The fourth wicket was down for 176. Crawford then improved, and indulged in nowerful driving, but wickets fell fast. Whittv secured h ; s five wickets with the last nineteen balls, off which two fours were scored. ' Trumper was yorked, his middle stump being knocked out of the ground, flardsley played trood all round the wicket cricket, llushley's first three overs proved disastrous to the visitors. In the first over he secured Noble, who batted soundly for 50 minutes. In his second over Strudwiek took Armstrong low down on the off side, and repeated the same catch brilliantly off Hansford in llushley's third over. The light i was bad. The following are the scores : SURREY.—Ist Innings. Holland, -however, has left the Oval to take up the position of coach at Oundle school. Inasmuch as Surrey meet all the first-class counties and "also play two matches each with the Australians and Oxford, some changes in the eleven are from time to time inevitable, but it will be well if something like the best team can be kept together. In 29 county matches last year 26 players took part, some of them, however, only making one appearance. The doubtful point about Surrev cricket is the bowling. Hayward,- Hobbs, Marshal, Hayes and J. 'N. Crawford, with several useful plavers to help them, can look after the run-getting. Great things may be expected "of Marshal, who improved tremendouslv last year. It would be difficult to find in all England a harder hitter'or a better field.'/ (It will be noticed that nothing is said about Rushlcv, who is proving such a thorn in the side of the Australians.) A NEW ZEALANDER'S SUCCESS. LONDON, May 17. D. C. Collins! a New Zealauder, scored 113 and 138 in the Cambridge seniors match.
