The prosecution's witnesses and speeches lauded Azeff's services, and fiercely denounced Lopukhin for going over to the camp of Plehve's murderers, as a traitor who had destroyed sources of information concerning the terroristic plans. Contrary to established customs, when Lopukhin endeavoured to speak the President of the Court continually interrupted him, until the accused was silenced. Lopukhin ended by stating that the Czar would have eventually fallen a victim to Azeff. "You may convict me, but 1 acted in the interests of humanity."
