IMPORTANT PROPOSALS
At the annual conference of representatives from the several A. and P. Societies in the Dominion, the Canterbury Society has decided to bring forward- the" following '"suggestions: — With the view of oiicoiffaging' the distribution, and exchange, of. purebred stock, the Railway Departnie'nt. to be asked to make the following concessions, vix.'.—(a) That all" stock 'sent to shows for exhibition be carried at .half rates. ■ If the whole or-any part of a consignment be returned to the original sending station within one niouth ■ of the closing of the show, the' exhibits to be carried back free, 'biit at owner's risk, upon -production of a. certificate in writing from the owner, or his agent that the consignment-con-sists solely of exhibits taken or sent Jjy himself to the said show. ~(!>)" AJI exhibits pun-hased or exchanged and returning with such' consignment, and. -not requiring additional trucks-to be carried free. That it-be a recommendation to the Educational Department that rudimentary agriculture be. a compulsory subject in the 'curriculum of primary -schools!- That.it be -a' recommendation to "the" Agricultural .Department that experiments /by"" farmers be conducted under the 'supervision', of-a Government director, in grasses, fodder crops, root crops, and" 'that experimental plots be. provided in" the South ■lsland -where, new., seeds- andi plants could' he treated, and .those/found' suitable afterwards distributed to;farmers. That it is desirable to enforce'the provisions of the Noxious; Weeds- Act more stringently, especially with' reference to the Californian thistle. That.the Government be urged to make compulsory, an analysis of special.- foods and condiment for stock.: That the• Sheep Dipping Act be strictly enforced with a. view to eradicating, the sheep tick. -That the Government be asked to consider tlie matter of taking steps to encourage the/breeding of light horses. The Horse Committee -recommended that the Draught Horse. -Stud Book be published as formerly by the Association, and that it be deft open till the end of the present year; after the publication of the volume -now. in hand no horses be admitted except the progeny of stock already entered ;. stock may also be- admitted •which; can show two crosses of ' purebred" stock oh the sire's side and one on ;tho dam's .side. The report was adopted. .
