MISS JEAN 110W1S0N
At the Assembly Rooms to-night Miss Jean Howison, of Perth,, Scotland, will give a recital from the works of Scotia's poet Robert Burns. This is from the Ashburton "Mail" and •'Guardian"As a platform speaker, Miss Howison occupies a place of high distinction, and as an interpreter of Burns she may almost, claim pre-emin-ence. Sho lias looked into the very soul of the poet, and has studied every phase of his character. The lecture abounded in Scottish humour, and while Miss Howison was very pleasing in this respect, her powerful pathos was far more effective, and in the recital of 14 Man was made to mourn," she was particularly impressive, and revealed all the rich worth of the sentiments, which Burns lias embodied in that poem. She recited many of Burns' poems, and sometimes added to their interest by recounting the circumstances under which they were written. Altogether the lecture was most enjoyable, and those who were present showed their warm approval by hearty applause.
