Federation refused to accept a reduction of 12J per cent. The coalmasters' and men's delegates afterwards discussed matters, but failed.'to agree, and adjourned till May 22nd. Eight thousand men are affected. • . The South Wales coalmasters propose a. reduction of 7.V per cent., but the men decline to accept this, and the dispute has been referred to the chairman of the Conciliation Board.
A joint conference of the steelmakers and their employees at Swansea decided on a general eight hours day for the trade. "WAR TO THE KNIFE." PROPOSED TRIPLE STRIKE. Received 1.20 a.m., Mav 12th. PARIS, May 11. The Federal Committee of the postal employees lias placarded Paris with an appeal to Parliament to dismiss M. Simyan, otherwise war to the knife may be expected. A strike will be declared to-night. The general labour federation is planning a triple strike of railwaymen, electricians and postal officials. PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS. Per Press Association. INVERCARGTLL, May 11. The Southland Branch -of the Employers' Association has decided to confirm the resolution recently passed by the Advisory Board'protesting againsti the inclusion of the preference to unionists clauses in' industrial awards. It was also decided to recommend'employers to observe .Tune 3rd as a. general holiday in preference to May 24tli.
