MOXTHLY MEETING. A meeting of the South Canterbury Education Hoard was held in the ' Boardroom yesterday. Present, .Messrs .J. .Jacksi ill (chairman). C. S. Howard, .J. I .Maze. (!. \\ . The chairman stateil that since last meeting he hud received the resignation ol Mrs Gale, sole teacher Te Moana, ami Miss Laura Jetl'ries. assistant, Claremont. The following temporary appointments had been., made: v laiHleboye, -\I \s .Millar; Milford, John McKeaguo; Orari Bridge, .Miss Mary Shires; Waitaki assistant, .Miss A. M. Griffin. At the aunnal meeting of householders, 63 districts elects ed committees, one district (Seaelected four menibers out of seven, 11 had reported failure to elect, and three districts had not ; et reported the result of the election: It was for the Board to appoint another date for ejection for those districts where no committees were elected and to appoint three members to complete the Seadown committee. Since last Board day a letter had been re- | ceivod frorii the specialist in agriculture. whose services the Board was ! hopeful of securing, stating that he had accepted another engagement. He was advised that it was very doubtful whether the Board would be able to get anyone else with the necessary qualifications for the position. It was resolved that tenders be called for the increased porch accommodation. as per the architect's plan. On consideration that the committee give the Board £lo, the shelter sheds will also' be erected. A return was laid before the Board by the secretary showing the schools supplied with American single and dual desks and the number of desks, as follows: —Timaru Alain, 80 single, Waimate, 60 single, -12 double, Tenmka, 40 'single, Pleasant Point, 35 single, Geraldinc, lii single, -30 dual, Timaru South, 30 dual.. Other applications from Timaru Main and Waimataitai were held over. All school committees who have surplus {lesks are to be requested to consign them to the Board. CORRESPONDENCE. The Education Department wrote stating tnat claims tor the refund of sums .vpent by the Board, within the limit oi the grant for the purcnase of certain senool books, will lie paid mi receipt of eertincate that the expenditure is in accordance with the conuitions. —Received. A suggestion uas approved that n any of the grant Wt-re lelt over after the purchase ol necessary books, the head master be allowed u. expend the surplus in supplementary readers for the children, .subject to the Board's approval. The Education Department wrote for copy of the proposed probationers regulations.—Regulations would he sent v.hen drawn up.

The secretary of the Waiinate Technical Classes Association wrote asking ior the name of the Board's second representative on the Association. —-Ur Morgan was appointed as representative ior the Board. The Albury school committee asked for certain additions to the school, such as a closet, wlucii had been blown down in the recent gale; also increased accommodation for tiie pupils.— Keferred to the inspector to report, as to increased accommodation, and if he considers the work necessary it would Indone.

Mr W. A. Weaver, Belfield, asked for repairs to the school residence. —A price for the work to be obtained locally. .Mr P. Piddle, commissioner for the Chamberlain school, wrote stating that no committee had been elected.. The gale of Easter blew the school tank a mile away from the school, and smashed it beyond repair, and lie asked for a new one. Gapes' Valley and the I'pper Pareora also asked for tanks.— The Board will take steps to procure and supply tanks where needed.

The Morveu school committee asked that the school building be painted at the earliest opportunity and that some repairs lie done.—Held over. The Ophi school committee asked for the school to lie painted.—Held over.

The chairman of the late Scotsburn school committee, wrote stating that no new committee had been elected. Gorse in the garden of the master's residence needed clearing. The Board was asked to appoint a sewing mistress.—The master was granted £'t for gorse clearing.

The Timarii Main school committee forwarded resolution passed at the householders meeting re the advisability of limiting the work in the compilation of cadet shooting records, and asked that the Board forward it to the proper authorities.—To be done.

in delivery of correspondence.- —Request agreed to. The Washdyke school committee wrote re the advisability oi altering the site of- tiie school, and also asked lor repairs to the School. —Foreman to attend to the repairs. The headmaster of the Winchester school asked that repairs he mfde. to a leaking roof. —Foreman to report. The truant- officer reported that lie had conducted 53 cases for truancy against various schools in the. district.

Five applications were received for sole teachorship at Orari bridge, Miss M. A. Jennings being appointed, and at Kapua, three applicants, .Miss R. Traecy being appointed. Xo applications were receivetl for Orari south or Waitaki (Tawai), and it was decided to continue with the temporary teachers.
