THEATRE ROYAL.

A GOOD PROGRAMME

Mr Sherwood put on a very good programme of pictures at the Theatre. Boyal last night, and the additional attraction of a "beauty show" b/ought a crowded house. Circle and stalls were too full, and overflowed to some extent behind the scenes, while there remained some spare space in the pit. The films were said by habitues to be the best set yet shown, and. in consequence of the visit of Pathe pictures, to-night is the last time they can be shown. A very pretty story without words was "The Signalman's Sweetheart," and very realistic ones were v.lligatorhuntiug on the Zambezi, and a Manhatton motor race. Deer hunting in Canada, and scenes about Palermo were also interesting. The comic scenes wero well got up, especially "House-cleaning Day." For the " beauty show," ten Timaru young ladies sent in photographs to be made into lantern slides, and Amy Bock made an eleventh.. The audience, provided with voting slips, were the judges, and Miss Rose Gilbert'(No. 5) came out on top-' of the poll with 384 votes, Miss Ford (No. 1) second with 228. Miss Gilbert came on the stage and was presented with the prize, a gold bangle. This evening a. child's gold bangle will be given on a similar vote among 22 portraits received of children from one to nine years of- age. Mr Sherwood announced that he will give a cup for the best ladies' team in the Hockey Association for the season, and another for the best team in the South Canterbury Rugby Union competitions. -
