PERSONAL ITEMS.
Mr Thomas Humphries, the retiring Surveyor-General, was entertained by the departmental staff at Wellington yesterday, and presented with a cheque for a substantial amount. The presentation was made by the Prime .Minister. Mr Humphries joined the service as a cadet in 1857. The Hon. J. A. Millar left Wellington for Christchurch last night, en route to the West Coast to inspect the railways there. Sir Joseph Ward leaves' for Christchurch this evening, and to-morrow night attends the complimentary social to Mr T. H. Davey, M.P.
