TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

OFFICERS' REPORTS. The following reports considered by the Borough Council in committee -on .Friday, will he presented for adoption at the meeting of the Council this evening:—

The borough overseer (Mr A. Reswick) reported that the connections at Mill street, between 18-inch pipes and necessary sumps with the Brown street sewer, had been completed. The roadway in Stafford street, between Church and Cannon streets, had been finished with broken metal and prepared for asphalting when weather permits. For some months past- a considerable amount- of tar at od per gallon had been used, and as a result of an interview with the manager and the chairman of the Gas Company, he had secured a special reduction on the Council's supplies of .Id per gallon, equal to £25 10s on last year's consumption. He had inspected the invert in Edward street, of which Mr Bergin had complained, and recommended that the section could be secured from the Hooding complained of by laying about 30 feet .of 9-inch pipes to the covered invert in the adjoining section. The best remedy would be the idling up of the lower portion of the section to the level of the culvert. The overseer drew attention to the practice of depositing rubbish in open culverts, which, he said, was a most dangerous one. The outlet- of the George street sewer had required to be cleared every day during the previous week, and he recommended that tenders be called for the extension of the sewer as early as possible. He represented the Council at the sitting of the Conciliation Council in Christchurch on April 27th, and reported that- the Council had , been granted complete exemption from the terms of the award. Details were given of routine works carried out. He had obtained 50P bushels of oats at Is 6.Jd, and a further supply for the year of 1000 bushels would lie required. As building surveyor, he had issued during April last certificates for two new buildings, and two additions, at an estimated cost of £730.' The water-race was in good order, aiid a good supply was being delivered to the reservoir. During April eight applications for water connections' were dealt with.

The sanitary inspector (Mr J. R. Smith) reported that he had made a house to house inspection of nine streets, and six notices to abate nuisances had been served and attended to. No cases of infectious disease had been reported during the past fortnight. The Park curator (Mr G. E. Knowles) reported in detail on the work of the month. lie again drew attention to the need for an increased supply of water to the ponds. A parcel of native trees had been received from Mr Bowker.

The manager of the abattoirs (Mr A. M. Paterson) reported that during April there were slaughtered 183 cattle, 1405 sheep and lambs, and 21 pigs. 01 these, five cows and one sheep were condemned as unfit for human consumption. Some alterations were required in the woodwork of the building in order to make it more rainproof than at present.
