VOLUNTEERS.
— HIGH SCHOOL CADETS. An interesting ceremony took place in the grounds of the Waimate District High School yesterday afternoon when the "'Weekly Press" shield and medals were presented to the winners. There was a good attendance of the public. Dr Barclay , (chairman of the High School Board) and Sir C. J. Jackson (chairman of the school committee) made brief speeches on the importance of volunteering, and being ready for the defence of home and country should the necessity arise. As both are volunteer officers, they were able to treat the subjects in a manner only to be gained by experience. They congratulated the team on its success and hoped it would be an incentive to further conquests. His Worship the Mayor (Mr N. Francis) presented the shield (on behalf of the Press Company) which has now been won by the Waimate cadets for the third time. The Mayoress presented eaoli member of the team with a silver medal suitably inscribed, these being also provided by the Press Company and also presented the. special prizes to the variouis winners as under: Shield Team—CoL-Sergt. Adams, Sergeant Bird, Sergeant Barclay, Sergeant Havman, Cadets Cuthbertson, Smith, Nichols, Williams, Scott, Wilson. Best Eecruit: (Mrs J. Adams' gold medaU —Cadet Wilson. Mr Beckett's and Mr Cuthbert-son's prizes—Sergeant Havman. Mr A. J. Manchester's prizes—Cadets B. Havman. Williams and Bird. Mrs W. J. Wills prize for juniors—Cadet Dash. At the close thr'ee cheers were given for the Mayor pr.fl nTiel the rlmirmcn of the High School and School Committee.
