MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
To,"the Editor of the "Timaru Herald.'"' /Sir, —"Whether or not it is owing to the abolition of the ward system in Timaru, it is gratifying "to see so many candidates for municipal lionours coming forth on this occasion. Among the hew candidates Mr W. Gilchrist and 3ir J. Sinclair are the only two who Lave deemed it obligatory upon them "to -address the electors after nomination. This, it must be conceded, has lieeh done in such a manner that in reply the drainage engineer' has had to furnish two distinct reports in so many days, concerning the drainage scheme. The thanks of the electors-are due to these two candidates for having been the means of eliciting this very valuable information concerning the progress and cost of this undertaking up to .date. The figures supplied by the engineer do not to any material extent controvert Messrs' Gilchn'st .and Sinclair's statement. There is really only a small discrepancy of 7 inches in the depth of the Queen street sewer. The difference between the contract and cost price of the completed portion of the scheme, to the ordinary- ratepayer, is. to say the least of it, somewhat of a puzzler. Let us by outvotes to-day endeavour to infuse a little new blood into our municipal government. —I am, etc., - THE TRAINER.
